About Stephen Designer Dad | Artist | Photographer | Author
America’s Home and Style Designer, Stephen Saint-Onge (a.k.a “Designer Dad”), firmly believes that “good home design has the power to change lives.” During the past decade, he has become a recognized expert on the home, his work featured frequently in magazines and on television. His unique niche as a designer — one that understands the needs of the everyday family — has made him a standout in the marketplace. His focus is on the family home because he is living that same life with his own family.
Stephen is the Contributing Home Editor to Family Circle Magazine. His Designer Dad column appears in the magazine with numerous creative projects also featured on Family Circle's website and blog. Previously, Stephen penned a monthly column called House Calls with Stephen Saint-Onge in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine. Prior to that, he was the Home Design Contributing Editor for Cottage Living Magazine.
Stephen's work on television has included frequent guest appearances on THE TODAY SHOW and THE EARLY SHOW, as well as featured guest spots on OPRAH, THE VIEW, CNN, TLC and FOX, among others. His design work and style has been in newspapers including The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Miami Herald and The Chicago Tribune.
This year, Stephen released his first book, acting as both writer and photographer. NO PLACE LIKE HOME: Tips and Techniques for Real Family-Friendly Home Design, published by Wiley, was created to empower and motivate the everyday homeowner. Stephen’s book release struck a chord with the American consumer, selling out quickly and sending it into a second printing within one month of its release. It is now in its third printing since its February 2011 release. A recent book review stated, “This book is as essential as a cordless drill in any home.”
Aside from his numerous television and magazine appearances as a home designer and family-focused lifestyle expert, Stephen has also developed a following with his everyday lifestyle blog, Designer Dad. It has attracted his fans and home design enthusiasts alike to a location that further captures the creative works and essence of this respected and approachable designer in the areas of design, home, food, entertaining, family, the arts and reminding people — as does his book — to appreciate and enjoy the simple things in life: home, family and friends.
“I have the same ‘To-Do’ list on my refrigerator that everyone has," says the designer. "With a family, you are always running around and there is always something to be done with a home. In the midst of that, you want a home that is good to you and your family. Hopefully what I bring to the creative table will help everyone see the best in their homes and their lives overall.”
When he is not working, Stephen loves being at home with his family and working on his own home. He has a passion for film (especially the classic films of the 1940s), movie soundtracks, photography, vintage pick-up trucks, oil and watercolor painting, cooking, and taking in the sites of our great American countryside.
"Song for a New Beginning" by Secret Garden creates the musical backdrop for Stephen's videos on this site. Their new CD, "Winter Poem," can be previewed by clicking here.
