About the Materials, Components & Finished Product
Do you Guarantee your photos on canvas?
Can you make custom canvas sizes?
What equipment and materials are used to create my photo canvas?
How long will my canvas photo last?
Controlled laboratory tests performed by Wilhelm Imaging Research, the world's leading authorities on art print longevity, show that canvases produced using APC’s combination of equipment and materials are rated to resist fading and deterioration for more than 150 years. (The canvases printed by most labs are produced only to “Art Decor” standards, rated to last three to ten years.) If shown the same care customary for any piece of fine artwork, the canvas you order from APC today will continue to be radiant for generations to come!
What's the difference between a “stretched canvas” and a “gallery wrapped canvas?”
Our “gallery wrapped” canvases are mounted on thick 1-1/2 inch deep stretcher bars. The image printed on the canvas wraps around the sides, creating a contemporary finished piece of wall art that looks great from every viewing angle. Gallery wraps are specifically designed to be displayed without a picture frame and arrive ready to hang. APC even includes the hanging hardware.
Why do you offer an “unstreteched” canvas option?
All unstretched canvases created by APC are sized with a minimum of two inches of extra unprinted area on all four sides to accommodate future stretching. The “live area” (image area) will exactly match the size you order. For example, if you ordered a 24" x 36" unstretched canvas, your image would be printed at exactly that size, but the canvas itself would be at least 28" x 40" including the extra unprinted area.
Do you print on papers/materials other than canvas?
Can I “embellish” my printed canvas?
Can I display my photo canvas outdoors?
And it voids the APC Guarantee.
That being said, we are aware that several of our clients have done just that with good results. Our canvases are sealed with the best archival top coat available, and it does serve to protect them from UV fading, moisture and abrasion.
We conducted our own “experiment” with outdoor displays over a two-year period. After moving into our new facility in 2007, we created our own “temporary” signage using the exact same canvas, inks and coatings that we use for all of our jobs. The signage faced East-West with no shade and no cover, fully exposed to southwest Florida’s unrelentingly intense sun and, of course, frequent rains and thunderstorms. The canvases were gallery wrapped, and we adhered the stretcher frames to masonry using a continuous application of silicone glue to try to prevent intrusion of moisture and insects. Over time, we observed some very slight fading (only in the reds) as well as growth of some spotty mildew on portions of the canvases. (We easily removed the small mildew “spots” with tap water and a cloth every few months.) The stretches remained tight throughout. Due to the type of installation, we were unable to directly observe the ongoing conditions of the wood stretcher frames that lay beneath the canvases, but we can tell you they still put up a fight when they were removed from the masonry. A new logo heralded the end of our experiment – not the condition of the signage after two years. Overall, we were pretty amazed. We never expected the experimental signage to hold up under those conditions for so long. Had they been displayed in a “protected” outdoor setting, we theorize they’d have fared even more impressively.
We feel it’s important to point out that our experiment was never intended to result in APC beginning to market its products for outdoor use. It was strictly to satisfy our curiosity about the normal longevity of the materials placed under “accelerated” conditions. We knew, based on data extrapolation supplied by experts in the field, that we were already using the highest quality materials – from canvas to inks to coatings to stretcher bars – but reading reports can really only instill a limited degree of confidence. The signage experiment has allowed us to develop that “genuine” confidence we were seeking because it is now based on our own first-hand experiences.
So, while we’re in no way encouraging you to do it, we’re also telling you that it certainly can be done - at least for a limited time. Results may vary!

About Your Digital Photos, Photo Prints and Original Artwork
What types of originals can I use to create a photo canvas?
What digital image file formats do you accept?
Will my image be looked at prior to printing?
Do you charge extra to “touch up” my image?
Many labs charge extra for these basic services. Others don’t offer them at all because, with their one-size-fits-all automated approach to doing business, they can’t (or won’t) even look at your photos before printing them. At APC, we’re different. We’ve found that most photos can benefit tremendously from some expert TLC. Our gifted imaging staff puts their skills to work making sure your images look their absolute best before reproducing them on canvas.
Can you perform more extensive retouching?
Please choose "Extensive Retouching" and describe your requests in detail using the "Comments / Instructions" section in Step 3 of the order process. The minimum charge for Extensive Retouching is $29.00. If your retouching requirements will exceed the minimum charge, an APC representative will contact you to outline the proposed charges and process an additional payment for the difference prior to proceeding. To find out what's feasible and determine retouching fees in advance, feel free to upload your image via the Artistic Photo Canvas DropBox and then e-mail us with a description of your needs.
What resolution or digital image size is required for a quality photo enlargement?
We realize that to some of our customers, that answer will sound conveniently simplistic! The reality is that we could write an entire book on this topic and still not give numeric answers that work. Every image is different. Some photos won’t look good no matter how high the resolution or how big the file size. Conversely, we’ve created a few gorgeous canvases from pictures shot with lowly low-res camera-phones. The point is that most of the time things work out great without anyone having to read a dissertation on the topic. Despite the fact that we don't have room to do that here even if we wanted to (and you probably wouldn't read it if we did), you really can take us at our word. It doesn't serve our customers’ interests or our own to send out ugly, pixelated enlargements. Rest assured that we will let you know if there is something about your uploaded file that would result in anything less than a beautiful finished canvas at the size you have ordered.
If you want to make our job easier and possibly preclude an email or phone call from our production department (not that you wouldn’t like our bright and friendly staff!), there are a few things you can do to help us create the best possible enlargement for your canvas:
Whenever possible, please upload the original, uncropped version of your image that came directly from a digital camera. (If you crop your image, you may unwittingly limit your gallery wrap options. It’s better to describe to us how you’d like the image cropped using the “Comments / Instructions” box in Step 3.)
When selecting your upload, try not to mistake a thumbnail version for the real image. The easiest way to tell is to check the file size. If it’s under 100KB it’s probably a thumbnail. (Even when set to lower resolutions, most digital cameras create much larger files.) Generally speaking, the original version of your image will have a file size approaching 1MB – and if you're using a later-model digital camera and/or high quality settings – likely much larger.
If someone sent you a family photo via email – or if you downloaded it from your photo sharing website – assume it is of diminished quality and see if you can get the original instead. Email and web photos may look great on a computer monitor, and they’re certainly easy to transfer due to their small files sizes. But in many cases they are re-saved versions that have been “dumbed down” – stripped of the data that would allow for the best possible quality print.
I want to scan my own photo or artwork. What settings should I use?
How you save your image is just as important, so please choose a quality format (such as TIFF or JPEG) and make sure that the “quality” options in the “Save” dialog box are set to the equivalent of “best” or “high.”
How much image area is required for gallery wrap edges?
If you are a professional (or really know your way around a good digital image editing application), and you’d like to have total control over the final composition of your gallery wrap, here are some tips on how to prepare and preview your image:
Upsample your image using your preferred method to your choice of 180, 240 or 360 ppi. (Inspect your image for unwanted pixelization or excess sharpening by zooming in tightly!)
Crop your image (retaining 180, 240 or 360 ppi) to the desired dimension of your custom canvas PLUS 3.5 inches in both the vertical and horizontal dimensions.
Position guides at 1-3/4" in from all four sides. Position another set of guides at 1/4" in from all four sides. The 1/4" sections are “production excess” that roughly represent the parts of your image that will be unseen on the back of your canvas. The 1-1/2" sections represent what will be seen on the edges of your gallery wrapped canvas. The rest of the image inside the guides is what will appear on the front side of your canvas.

You can also hear about special promotions by becoming a “fan” of APC on Facebook and/or following APC on Twitter.
Why are your prices lower (or higher) than Tom, Dick & Harry?
For those who've found a company on the lower end of the spectrum, here are just a few of the unsavory ways some companies are cutting costs (and shortchanging their customers):
Blind automation: Computers, or in some cases human “Button-Pushers” – whose biggest talents are knowing how to push the “print” button really, really fast – send your image to print without even looking at your original. (You would be amazed how much most images can be improved with the help of an imaging expert and a little TLC!) At APC, we treat every image as if it were our own.
Cheap canvas: There are some really cheesy canvas products available on the market. So cheap, in fact, they can't even be stretched tightly on a stretcher frame without ripping. (Which is why some of our top competitors' canvases are so loose on their stretcher frames. At APC, our heavy-duty canvases are stretched by hand, tight as a drum!) While we're on the topic of inkjet canvas, many of the cheaper varieties will actually turn yellow over time due to the addition of copious amounts of “optical brighteners.” And still other “kanvas” products aren't canvas at all, possessing all the charm and artistic merit of the vinyl banners hawking cigarettes at your local gas station.
No protective coating: Many companies are shipping out inkjet canvases without a protective coating. Good archival coatings are expensive, but the practice of skipping this crucial step in the photo-to-canvas process is just not an option for any quality printmaker. An uncoated canvas is virtually guaranteed to chip and crack under the lightest handling – not to mention fade very prematurely, and smear if you get it even slightly wet. Please trust us when we tell you that failing to properly coat an inkjet canvas is a loathsome cost-cutting tactic.
“Made in China”: Some internet labs mislead customers into believing that their facilities are in the U.S. but actually transmit your order overseas, taking advantage of questionable materials, child labor, and the deplorable wages and working conditions in developing nations. These outfits may produce their canvases at a lower cost – and lower quality – but is that how you want to spend your money? Every APC canvas is proudly made in the USA by American artists and craftsmen!
Can you ship my order to someone else?
Do you offer gift wrapping?
What are your shipping charges?
Do you ship internationally?
If you’re not already versed in shipping packages overseas, you may want to brace yourself for a shockingly high quote. Unfortunately, it’s not at all uncommon for the international shipping to cost more than the canvas itself. In fact, for the price of sending your canvas in a packed cargo hold alongside hundreds of other price-gouged packages, you could likely purchase a round-trip coach class ticket on a passenger jet to the same location and put the canvas in it’s own cushy seat. Hey folks, we don’t set the rates (and we don’t jack them up). We’ll be in your corner if you want to take up your indignation with FedEx and UPS.
